Tackling Malaria in Nigeria: Prevention Starts at Home

Malaria continues to be one of Nigeria’s deadliest health challenges, accounting for a large percentage of hospital visits and deaths every year, especially among children under five and pregnant women. Despite decades of effort, malaria remains endemic due to poor sanitation, stagnant water, and inadequate mosquito control measures.

The reality is that malaria is both preventable and treatable. The use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, prompt medical testing, and the availability of effective drugs have all proven to reduce the burden of the disease. However, gaps in community awareness, irregular use of nets, and resistance to medications keep the numbers high.

At HEALS, we work to increase public awareness on malaria prevention and treatment. Through our community programs, we educate families on environmental cleanliness, encourage the use of mosquito nets, and promote regular health check-ups for early detection. Clean surroundings, covered drains, and elimination of stagnant water are some of the simplest yet most effective actions households can take.

We also advocate for continuous government and private sector collaboration to ensure affordable access to mosquito nets, diagnostic kits, and effective antimalarial drugs.

Together, we can make malaria history in Nigeria one community at a time.

Live Right. Stay Healthy.
