Cervical cancer remains a serious public health issue in Nigeria, yet it is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early. Each year, thousands of Nigerian women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and many lose their lives simply because the disease is discovered too late. At HEALS, we believe that no woman should suffer or die from a disease that can be prevented through vaccination, screening, and awareness.
Cervical cancer is caused primarily by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual contact. While HPV infections are common, persistent infection with high-risk strains can lead to changes in cervical cells that may develop into cancer if left untreated.
The good news is that with proper vaccination and regular screening, cervical cancer can be effectively prevented. The HPV vaccine, now available in Nigeria’s routine immunisation schedule, protects against the most dangerous types of the virus. Screening tests such as Pap smears or HPV DNA tests detect early warning signs before they progress to cancer.
Sadly, many women in Nigeria still lack access to these services due to low awareness, stigma, and limited health infrastructure, particularly in rural and low-income areas. That’s why HEALS is committed to taking the message directly to communities through health education programs, outreach screenings, and advocacy for better healthcare access.
We encourage all women, especially those aged 25 to 65, to undergo routine screening and to vaccinate eligible girls between the ages of 9 and 14. Early detection saves lives and awareness empowers communities.
Live Right. Stay Healthy.
